Teeth Cleaning

Pediatric dentists usually clean a child’s teeth as part of a periodic preventive visit.

This is often referred to as a dental prophylaxis and can be completed with a rubber cup on a dental hand-piece or a regular manual toothbrush, using a professional toothpaste that is more abrasive than pastes used at home.

This procedure is more effective in removing stains and heavy plaque that are often present in spite of good brushing at home. Flossing is also done during most preventive appointments. Older children and teenagers sometimes accumulate tartar on their teeth and this is treated with a scraping procedure referred to as scaling. Plaque and tartar removal is important to good gum health as well.
